Unexpected encounters of the prickly, Australian kind

Yesterday afternoon I decided to go for a run, and I was glad I did, because only a couple of kilometres up the road I found this echidna. He had disturbed a nest of sugar ants, and I tried not to step on any of the escapees as I climbed up onto the verge for a closer look. The echidna just burrowed down deeper into the leaf litter, of course, but I enjoyed checking out his spiky back.

As I resumed my run I messaged the photo to a friend who is currently in London for a conference. Nothing like an echidna to make you homesick in the best way, and blessed to live where we do.
